Tight Competition at Crow Nest Park.

The first Alliance of the season produced a three-way tie in the Pro-Am and a tight result in the Am-Am from an excellent field with 11 Pros in the full entry of 49 pairs.

The Pro-Am was won with 41 points by Richard Lambert / Ed Pearson (19), Crosland Heath, Gareth Moore / Paul Ratcliffe (5), Hanging Heaton and Adam Walker / Aaron Schnacke (+2), Ind. Huddersfield.

The Am-Am was won with 42 points by Eddie Casper (10) / John Morris (18), Outlane with Chris Mowl (2) / Richard Langley-Webb (10), Crow Nest Park second on 41 points. In third place on a back 6 countback on 40 points were Alan Hollingworth (13) / Dennis McAuliffe (18), Crow Nest Park.

There were 3 net eagles at the short 4th hole by Jamie Smith, Roger Pearson and D. Hughes. There were a further 2 at the long second hole by Luke Pilkington and Simon Whitham and at the 9th by Michael Illingworth and at the 15th by Mike Bailey.

The course was in excellent condition with some very interesting pin positions. It was a warm sunny day with only the lightest of breezes.

West End professional Darren Arber was welcomed as president for the new season.

The next regular event is at Dewsbury District G.C. on Thursday 16 October. In place of the cancelled National Alliance we have an away-day at Sandburn Hall G.C. near York.

Meltham Double at Dewsbury District.

A super 11 under par score of 47 points secured a clear win in the Am-Am for Meltham’s Mike Maude and Simon Mourne with Meltham also taking the Pro-Am with Simon Race and Chris Holmes on 45 points.

After heavy over-night rain the course was wet but with negligible casual water and soft, receptive greens. With no wind or rain and with some sunshine target golf was the game and the scoring reflected this. All the leaders had very tidy cards with dropped shots being rare. Overall the average score was 3 under par at 39 points. There were three gross eagles, Luke Pilkington at the drivable par 4 15th, John Lawton at the par 5 10th and James Ward at the par 5 11th. There were also 14 net eagles and eagles were recorded on 10 different holes.

The Pro-Am Was won by Simon Race & Chris Holmes (7) of Meltham with 45 points from Rob Booth & Jamie Bower (plus 4) of Crosland Heath & Meltham on 44 points.

The Am-Am was won by Mike Maude (5) & Simon Mourne (10) of Meltham on 47 points from John Lawton (6) & Steve Beeby (6) of Outlane on 45 points.

The entry for today was well down on what we usually have and hope for better support at West End on the 28th.

Very Close Results at West End

There were points ties in both sections on another fine day (for most) on a course in excellent condition. A sunny, breezy start turned to rain in the late afternoon. The course was dry and the greens were quite firm but receptive with a true roll and quite fast for the end of October.

Tied on 41 points in the Pro-Am were Rob Booth & Paul Crosse (13) of Crosland Heath and Lee Shepherd & Andy Petrikas (14) of Stadium Golf / Dewsbury. There was a four-way tie for third place on 40 points, Nigel Hirst & Carl Smallpage (5) of Dewsbury having the best back nine score. Petrikas got a net eagle on the down-wind short par four 5th hole.

A three-way tie on 42 points in the Am-Am was resolved on a back nine countback with Brian Minto (11) & son Scott Minto (4) of Hanging Heaton coming out top by a point from Trevor Williams (12) & David Ford (20) of Crosland Heath. In third were Richard Popps (20) & Joe Wowson (6) of Bradley Hall who had made a fine start with 24 points on the front nine. Popps had a net eagle on the 5th matched by Williams on the long uphill dog-leg par four 14th and Brian Minto on the par five 11th.

There were a total of nine net eagles, the highlight being the gross eagle by Richard Wimpenny on the 17th where he holed out with his 5 iron second shot. The others were by L’Estrange at the 4th, Ellis at the 5th, Maude at the 9th and Wormald at the 12th.

The next Alliance is at Outlane Golf Club on Tuesday, 11 November.

Crosland Heath Dominate at Outlane

Three of the four prizes on offer at Outlane were taken by Crosland Heath in a very closely contested Alliance. Played on a wet, soft course without rain but a cool Easterly wind at times the scoring was generally very good with few scores below par.

The Pro-Am was won by Rob Booth and Chris L’Estrange (12) of Crosland Heath with 43 points from Bradley Hall’s Tim Pollard and Mick Appleyard (6) on 42. There was a single eagle in this section coming from Nigel Hirst with a 2 at the 315 yard 11th into the wind.

There was a three way tie on 43 points in the Am-Am which saw Chris Holmes (7) and John Crosland (8) of Meltham eliminated in the back nine count-back. Counting back to the last hole produced a win for Crosland Heath’s Luke Pilkington (1) and Oliver Shaw (5) who’s birdie beat the net par by same club’s Ed Pearson (19) and Mat Russell (19). Alex Malins (5), Ind. Woodsome, chipped in from the fringe on the par 5 12th for a 3, a net albatross. There were also 13 net eagles of which 5 were at the 12th. Ed Pearson had two net eagles as did Crow Nest Park’s Chris Taylor.

The next Alliance is at Halifax Golf Club on Tuesday, 25 November.

President Wins at Ogden

Alliance president Darren Arber partnered by Dean Bradley (10) of West End carded a 47 from a late start to overtake Tom Wild and Gary Ward (6) of Bradley Park who had sat on 46 points all day. They were joined on the same score by Richard Lambert and Alan Dyson (6) of Crosland Heath who started at the 16th tee. Also starting at the 16th were the Am-Am winners Tony Gerrard (6) and John Broadbent (12) of the home club who’s 47 points passed the early clubhouse leaders Mick Hanson (12) and Olly Barstow (7) of Bradley Park who were holding a lead on count-back from John Lawton (6) and Steve Beeby (6) of Outlane on 46 points.

The course was in very good condition although wet from the earlier rains and in the sunny windless conditions and played from forward tees very good scoring was to be expected. Arber / Bradley had a net eagle and 9 net birdies (7 gross), Lambert / Dyson had 10 net birdies (7 gross) and Wild / Ward also had 10 net birdies (6 gross). Neal Reeves and Mark Birkett (scr) of Stadium Golf who were first out made a fine start with 5 birdies in the first 6 holes but ended with 43 points in fourth in the Pro-Am. In the Am-Am Gerrard / Broadbent had 3 net eagles and 6 net birdies, Hanson / Barstow 2 and 6, Lawton / Beeby 1 and 7, Jimmy Caine (5) and Jarrad Hazelden ( 3) of Crosland Heath / Outlane had 2 and 5 to finish 4th on 44 points tied with Jamie Smith (scr) and John Jennings (5) of Bradley Hall / Halifax who had 9 net birdies.

Rob Booth is still the clear leader of the Order of Merit on 33 points with Richard Lambert and Tom Wild tied on 20 points. Crosland Heath now lead the Club Championship on 215 points from Outlane, 210, and Meltham, 205.

Today’s Alliance was so well supported with 58 pairs playing that a two tee start was needed to get everyone finished before dark.

The Alliance restarts in the new year at Crosland Heath Golf Club on Tuesday, 24 February.

Tough Day at Crosland Heath

Rob Booth partnered by Jamie Bower overcame the elements to win the pro-am with an excellent 42 points in very difficult conditions. Luke Pilkington and Michael Dunne won the am-am with 41 points.

Overnight snow had cleared by morning but had left five greens unplayable and play from the forward winter tees reduced three of the par 5s so the effective par for the course was 39 points. In cold strong blustery West winds with hail and rain showers the average score was only 34 points. The greens had been hand-cut the previous day and were nearly as quick as in summer and the temporary greens were good.

Most of the best scores came from early starters who suffered the wettest conditions although Alliance President Darren Arber and partner Michael Clegg were pro-am runners up in the brighter afternoon. All the am-am prize winners were single figure golfers.

Pro-am 1st Rob Booth & Jamie Bower (plus 4) of Crosland Heath & Meltham with 42, 2nd Darren Arber & Michael Clegg (16) of West End with 40 and tied on 3rd with 37 were Jack Pearcey & Keith Waddington (20) of Bradley Park, Dave Delaney & Paul Caldwell (12) of Bradley Hall and Richard Lambert & Keith Walker (13) of Crosland Heath.

Am-am 1st Luke Pilkington (2) & Michael Dunne (5) of Crosland Heath with 41, 2nd Ade Wallis (8) & Steve Hitchenor (8) of Crosland Heath and on count-back in 3rd Steve Smith(4) & Darren Davidson (3) of Halifax from 4th Nick Day (6) & Chris Mowl (2) of Crow Nest Park from David Shufflebotham (13) & Graham Simpson (18) of Marsden from Chris Holmes (7) & Roy Johnson (16) of Meltham on 38.

The next Alliance is at Halifax Bradley Hall Golf Club on Tuesday, 10 March.

Runaway Win for Home Pair at Bradley Hall

Steve Hopkinson (6) and Richard Popps (20) were winners of the am-am by 5 points at their home club with Mark Campbell (7) and Richard Langley-Webb (10) of Crow Nest Park in second place on 40 points on a back nine count-back from Clive McFadzean (4) and Andrew Guest (12) of Bradley Hall. Two of the next three pairs on 39 points were also from the home club.

The pro-am was very tightly contested with 2 points covering the top seven. Joint winners on 40 points were Joe Lester and Oliver Shaw (5) and Bob Booth and Chris L’Estrange (12), all from Crosland Heath. There was a three way tie for third on 39 points, Chris Hanson and Gary Shuttleworth (9) of Woodsome Hall and Bradley Hall, James Ward and Fergus Barron (5) of Dewsbury and Richard Lambert and Les Dyson (14) of Crosland Heath.

The green-keepers had been hard at work on the course with many new ditches in evidence although there were still plenty of wet areas. The greens had been “ironed” and were therefore quite fast but the uneven colouring of the grass made it difficult to get a good read. The weather was a complete contrast to the previous Alliance with sunshine and occasional cloud and a light cool breeze with died out by mid afternoon.

There were two gross eagles at the par 5 eighth by Rob Booth and by Paul Cross (14) of Crosland Heath. There were twelve net eagles, 4 of them at the par 4 fourteenth

The next Alliance is at Meltham Golf Club on Tuesday, 24 March.

The pro-am was closely contested with Rob Booth partnered by plus 4 handicap Jamie Bower (Crosland Heath / Meltham) on 41 points just edging Tom Wild & Luke Pilkington (1) (Bradley Park) and Gareth Evans & Nick Day (6) (Crow Nest Park) tied for second on 40 points. Most of the pro-am cards showed consistent scoring, the only eagles coming from Woodsome Hall’s assistant Adam Drury who took three stokes on each of the two par 5s.

The home club provided the first two places in the am-am, three points clear of third. On 45 points were Tom Hunt (3) & Tom Irving (14) with Chris Holes (6) & Ronnie Mellor (14) on 44. In third were Ryan Greenwood (scr) & M.Smith (7) (Elland / Bradley Park) on a back 6 count-back from Josh McAspurn (5) & Gareth McMahon (11) (Marsden / Meltham) on 42 points. Trevor Williams (12) (Crosland Heath) had a gross eagle on the par 4 15th , holing out of the rough from 95 yards, and there were a total of 11 net eagles.

The old course, the winter course, was in very good condition, benefiting from the dry late winter, early spring and the greens were excellent, almost up to summer standards. The weather was mixed with warm sunshine, cooler when cloudy and quite cold in the hail showers. There was generally little wind although there were brief spells of brisk breeze.

Rob Booth has an unassailable lead in the Order of Merit but not being a club pro cannot take the prize money. This is tightly contested by Richard Lambert on 32 points from Darren Arber on 30 and Tom Wild on 29 with three events to go.

The next Alliance is at Bradley Park Golf Club on Tuesday, 7 April.

Dominant Home Club Youngsters at Bradley Park.

There was an impressive 5 points winning margin in the am-am by the home club pair of Adam Taylor (8) and Ben Key (6) and a first win as a professional for Toby Garrett partnered by Mike Lawrence (9) of Crosland Heath on a day that favoured the big hitters. Although the weather was warm and sunny with only a light wind the course was very soft and the greens were bumpy resulting in very few good scores.

Toby Garrett, in his first Alliance as a professional, partnered by Mike Lawrence (9) won the Pro-Am for Crosland Heath with 41 points from Bradley Parks Tom Wild and Gary Ward (6) on 39, with only 2 points separating third to last.

Adam Taylor (8) and Ben Kaye (6) of Bradley Park won the Am-Am with an outstanding 44 points gained with very consistent scoring with only the “easy” 14th played over par. Tied on 39 points but with a better back nine Scot Minto (4) and Brian Minto (11) of Hanging Heaton were second from David Campbell (5) and Shaun Campbell (6) of Meltham.

Following a very cold night the grass was very wet and did not dry out until early afternoon despite the warm sunshine. With no run on the ball the course played very long from the back tees and there was only one net eagle scored on the day. The greens were soft and bumpy making short puts particularly difficult.

The next Alliance is the Ronnie Parkinson Trophy at Elland Golf Club on Tuesday, 21 April.

The Ron Parkinson Memorial Trophy was won in style by Crosland Heath’s professional Richard Lambert and Paul Land playing off 10 with a fine 42 points. Crosland Heath also took the am-am with Les Dyson and Mike Haigh, both off 14, on 40 points. We had a perfect sunny day and the course was dry and very well presented and the greens were fairly fast although a little bumpy.

Tied in second in the pro-am behind Lambert and Land were Garreth Evans and Mark Campbell (7) of Crow Nest Park and Nigel Hirst and Hendrik Murray (14) of Dewsbury. Lambert had 4 birdies and Land 1 gross and 2 net birdies. Campbell had the only net eagle in the pro-am, this at the opening hole of the back nine.

A three-way tie on 39 points for second in the am-am was resolved by a back-nine count-back with Frank Greaves (2) and Alan Platten (11) of Todmorden in second, Peter Brearley (20) and Dean Wright (19) of Crow Nest Park in third and just out of the prizes in fourth were Mike Dempsey (11) and Pete Newey (14) of Huddersfield. There were 8 net eagles in the am-am and unusually all were at different holes.

The Club Championship has been won by Crosland Heath on 416 points from Meltham on 403 and Outlane on 400. The Order of Merit for club pros is very tight with Richard Lambert just one point ahead of Tom Wild with Darren Arber a further 5 points back and so will be decided at the Page Trophy.

The next Alliance is the Page Trophy at Crosland Heath Golf Club on Tuesday, 5 May.

Superb Second Round Secures Page Trophy For Lewis Collier.

Lewis Collier followed up his win in the Meltham Trophy by produced a superb 9 under par second round at his home club to secure this seasons Page Trophy from early clubhouse leader Luke Pilkington of Bradley Park by 4 shots.

Ideal weather prevailed for the re-run of the rained off event and the Crosland Heath course was in excellent condition, the greens having been “ironed” providing very true surfaces. The entry was well down, which we find when events are held after the end of April.

After the first round of 69 Luke Pilkington (1) held a slender lead of one shot from Lewis Collier (4), Simon Whitham (13) and Richard Wimpenny (12) both of Crosland Heath. Luke produced a very good second round, starting with birdies on the first five holes and an eagle on the par 5 13th but spoiled by a triple bogy on the 15th for a 67 and a total of 135. A superb second round by Lewis with 7 gross birdies and 2 gross bogies produced a net 62 for a total of 131 to take the Page Trophy from Luke. A fine second round by Graham Proctor (10) of Crosland Heath of 69 gave him third place from Richard Wimpenny due to his better second round as both had totals of 140.

The prize for best gross score went to Chris Gaunt (1) of Dewsbury with 147, best net first round to Simon Whitham on 69 and best net second round to Richard Wimpenny on 71.

The team trophy was not contested as only Crosland Heath could field a full team.

Nigel Hirst of Dewsbury won the Colin H Swain cup for best professional with 76 and 70 for a total of 146 from his assistant James Ward with 76 and 71 for 147.

Dave Knapton wins the Roger Heap Cup.

The 18 hole Roger Heap Cup was closely contested with Dave Knapton (12) of Outlane winning by one shot with a net 69 from Richard Barker (15) of Crosland Heath and Charlie Burton (12) of Castlefields, Richard taking second on a back nine count-back.

Richard Lambert wins the Order of Merit.

A new cup donated by Alliance president Darren Arber was presented to the Professional Order of Merit winner Richard Lambert of Crosland Heath. Richard led the order of merit by one point from Tom Wild of Bradley Park coming into the Page Trophy but extended his lead to 3 points at the end of the day.
