Crow Nest Park Tuesday 18 September 2012.

The Am-Am title was retained by Crow Nest Park with last year’s winner Chris Mowl again taking first place, this time partnered by Richard Langley-Webb. The Pro-Am was also won by Crow Nest with Gareth Evans and Mark Campbell.

Crow Nest Park was in very good condition and there were some very tricky pin positions on the smooth quick greens which may be the reason for the generally lower scoring than last year. The day was sunny with blustery showers and the rough, as on all courses this year, was very dense.

In general the scoring by everyone was pretty consistent with scoring being well shared between partners and unusually there was not a single net eagle recorded. The card of Evans & Campbell (7) was the only one without a dropped point and their 41 points gave them the pro-am from Jack Pearcey & Tim Johnson (8) of Bradley Park on 39. Mowl & Langley-Webb (12) were the run-away winners of the am-am with 43 points from Mick Dempsey (9) & Pete Newey (13), Ind Huddersfield, on 39 points who were second on a back 6 countback from Barry Workman (14) & Barry Martin (12) of Bradley Park.

West End Golf Club, Wednesday, 3 October 2012.

Gareth Evans and Mark Campbell (8) of Crow Nest Park continued their winning way with another 41 points, the same as at Crow Nest, and 4 points ahead of runners up West End Pro Darren Arber partnered by Tom Colter (16).  The Am-Am was won by a late entry from the West End greenkeepers Rob Turner (8) and Union Champion Aaron Schnacke (Scr), Ind Huddersfield, on 41 points from Dave Knapton (11) and chef Nick Hirst (10) of Outlane on 40 by back nine countback.

Scoring was again quite consistent with only one gross eagle which was scored by Kevin Puckering (15) of Outlane at the 351 yd par 4 5th.

The course was very wet but hard work by the greenkeepers meant it was very playable as reflected by the generally good scoring. A mixture of sunshine and showers with fairly light winds kept the course wet all day.

Although well supported by the professionals we were again well down on entries with only 32 pairs in total. We must hope the entry picks up at the next events.

The next meeting is at Outlane Golf Club on Tuesday 16 October.

Outlane G.C. Tuesday 16 October 2012

After the scheduled event was rained off last week, this week we found the course swathed in mist. The visibility varied from time to time but was never good. Most long shots were hit into the mist but with extended gaps there were no mishaps. The course was very wet and preferred lies were in place through the green.

The event was again well supported by professionals with 9 pro-am pairs and 21 am-am. The pro-am prize was shared by Bradley Park’s Tom Wild / Mick Waddington (10) and Rob Stansfield / Gary Ward (9) on 42 points closely followed by Woodsome Hall / Bradley Hall pairing Chris Hanson / Gary Shuttleworth (11) on 41. An excellent round by Todmoreden / West End pairing of Dave Stafford (1) / Frank Greaves (1) of 44 points secured first place in the am-am with second going to Outlane’s Kevin Puckering (15) / Richard Wilson (19) on 42 points.

With no wind and despite the poor visibility the scoring generally was very good and two gross eagles were recorded, on the par 5 7th by Chris Holmes (7) of Meltham and on the short par 4 15th by Mick Lord (10) of Bradley Hall.

The next event is next Tuesday, 30 October, at Dewsbury District Golf Club.

Tuesday, 30 October, at Dewsbury District Golf Club.

Jack Pearcey & Mick O’Hara (8) of Bradley Park and Adam Walker & Aaron Schnacke (Scr) Ind. Huddersfield shared first place in the Pro-Am with 41 points. This was Adam’s first win as a professional. Mick O’Hara had net eagles at the 10th and 16th. Jamie Bower (+3) had a gross eagle on 11 and Steve Ward had a net eagle on 8.

Dewsbury had first and second places in the Am_Am, James Ward (1) & Danny Hartley (2) winning with 43 points from Carl Smallpage (6) & Ian Preston (10) on 41. Four net eagles were recorded in this section, Tony Sharp (10) at 2, Fred Leek (18) at 11, Alan Harper (18) at 13 and Ed Pearson (17) at 16.

It was a cool day with occasional drizzle and a strong westerly breeze in the afternoon. The course was very wet with some standing water but the greens were good despite the wet conditions. The course played very long due to the soft ground and still breeze.

The next event is next Tuesday, 13 November at Halifax District Golf Club.

Tuesday, 13 November at Halifax District Golf Club.

Nigel Hirst & Peter Jackson (7), Dewsbury District, won the Pro-Am with 42 points with 3 birdies and 3 net birdies on a still very wet course with a two club warm Southerly wind. Although the greens were wet and soft they were still good with a true roll. Second on 41 points were Tim Pollard & John Jennings (6), Bradley Hall / Halifax, with 3 birdies and 4 net birdies but 2 dropped points. Tied for third on 40 points were Jack Pearcey & Mick O’Hara (8), Bradley Park, and Adam Walker & Aaron Schnacke (Scr), Ind. Huddersfield. Aaron frightened the preceding group by driving the 6th green 320 yards down-wind across the corner and ditch.

Robert Turner (8) & David Hughes (12), Ind. Huddersfield, won the AM-Am on countback from 4 others with 40 points. Second were Dave Stafford (1) & Frank Greaves (1), Todmorden / West End, on back six countback from Richard Fairburn (7) & Richard Popps (20), Bradley Hall.

1st and 5th placed Am-Am pairs played the last couple of holes in the dark. There were many gaps between groups finishing the 18th, it is essential that players keep up with those ahead as we have so little daylight at this time of the year.

Tuesday, 19 February at Crosland Heath G.C.

A glorious sunny day without wind for the first Alliance of the year but the heavy overnight frost mean we had to play the first 10 holes to winter greens, shortening the course considerably hence the good scoring. A good entry or 12 professionals and a total of 62 pairs but unfortunately some people withdrew when they were told we were on some winter greens. This is unacceptable. If you enter a Winter Alliance you must accept that we play winter conditions.

The Pro-Am was won by Chris Hanson, back from playing in Kenya, partnered by Garry Shuttleworth (11) of Bradley Hall with 46 points. Tied for second were home club Pro. Richard Lambert and Captain Paul Booth (6) and Adam Walker of Longley Park partnered by Aaron Schnacke (scr) of Huddersfield with 44 points.

The Am-Am was won on a back 6 countback by Gareth Parker (11) and David Deadman (8) of Bradley Hall from Peter Heywood (13) and Dave Malinson (11) of Marsden with 46 points. Third were John Perks (7) and Peter Doolan (13) of Marsden on 45 points on countback from 3 others.

In general scores for the front nine were 4 or 5 better than the back nine and the median score was 41 points.

Tuesday 5 March at Bradley Hall G.C.

Chris Hanson again won the Pro-Am, partnered this time by John Smith (14) of Dewsbury, with 46 points. Chris recoded an eagle & 3 birdies and John a net eagle and 3 net birdies. Second were Gareth Evans & Nick Day (7), Crow Nest Park, on 44 points. Gareth recorded 3 birdies and Nick a net eagle and 4 net birdies. Third were Dave Astin, Ind Woodsome Hall, & Andy Cryer (9), West End, on 42 points. Dave recorded 5 birdies and Andy 2 net birdies.

The Am-Am was won by Clive McFadzean (4), Bradley Hall, & John Broadbent (14), Halifax, with 47 points on the last card in. Clive recorded 4 net birdies and John 3 net eagles and 2 net birdies. Second, on a back nine countback, were Trevor Williams (14) & Les Dyson (16), Crosland Heath, on 43 points. Trevor recorded 10 net birdies and Les one. In third, also on 43 points, were Paul Hesselden (12) & Gary Shuttleworth (11), Bradley Hall. Paul and Gary recorded 4 net birdies each.

A foggy morning resulted in a delay of 20 minutes to the start although visibility remained poor for most of the morning. By noon the visibility was quite good although it remained misty all day. When the sun broke through in the early afternoon the temperature rose but it was never warm.

The course was in good condition after a dry start to the year and the greens, although slow in the wet fog, were faster as they dried out. All tees were on mats and play was generally from the yellow posts, or just in front of the tees.

The median score was 37 points.

Many thanks to our sponsor, Neville Pollard, for boosting the prize fund for this event.

Tuesday 23 March at Metham G.C.

Another windy day for the players in the final better ball event of the season but this did not have the disastrous effect on the scores as last week. The Pro-Am was won by Nigel Hirst & John Smith (14) of Dewsbury on 39 points from this seasons Order of Merit winner Gareth Evans partnered by Nick Day (8) of Crow Nest Park on 38 and Dave Astin & M. Talbut (6) ,Ind Woodsome Hall / Hebden Bridge, also on 38. The Am-Am was even closer than the Pro-Am with three pairs on 38 points. Winners on a back 9 countback were Richard Badrock (15) & Fred Leek (18) of Castlefields with Chris Gaunt (2) & Darren Shooter (5) of Dewsbury second on a back 6 countback from Adrian Wallis (9) & Steve Hitchinor (10) of Crosland Heath.

The course was in excellent condition despite the recent snow, this event having been due to have been played 3 weeks ago when the course was covered by the snow. The green were very good and there were only a few water effected areas. Play was from the back tees and over the summer course. The median score was 33 points

With one event to go Gareth Evans has already won the Pro Order of Merit. Lower places will be decided at the Page Trophy next week at Outlane.

Tuesday 16 March at Marsden G.C.

The Ron Parkinson Trophy was won by Luke Pilkington, left, and Oliver Shaw, right, of Crosland Heath on a very difficult day.

Although sunny and fairly warm the very strong gusty wind from the west made playing conditions very hard. The greens were just slow enough to stop a stationary ball being moved by the wind but it was almost impossible to stop a ball on the green downwind.

Unusually in an Alliance the better scores in both divisions came from lower handicap golfers on a day when anything better than 26 points was a good score.

The pro-am was won by Garreth Evans & Mark Campbell (7), Crow Nest Park, with 30 points from Jack Pearcey & Mick O’Hara (8), Bradley Park on 29.

The am-am was won by Luke Pilkington (3) & Oliver Shaw (7), Crosland Heath, with 31 points from Dave Deadman (8) & Steve Sandie (6), Outlane / Bradley Hall, on 30.

Tuesday 30 March at Outlane G.C.  PAGE TROPHY

Julian Vickerman of Crosland Heath G.C. was the clear winner of this season’s final competition, the only individual medal of the Alliance, the Page Trophy. Carding a 64 net off a handicap of 9 he was 3 stokes clear of Outlane’s Steve Beeby (8) with Des Senior (9) of Hebden Bridge a further stroke back. Gareth Evans of Crow Nest Park won the Colin H Swain Trophy for the best professional with a score of 69 from Jack Pearcey of Bradley Park on 70 and tied for 3rd were Tom Wild of Bradley Park and Rob Booth of Crosland Heath on 71. The Emmie Smith trophy was won by Outlane with an excellent score of 208 for the 3 man team of J.Lawton (5), G.Hirst (7) & E.Casper (10).

After the strong cold winds of the previous events we had a gentle breeze with sunshine and occasional clouds. The course was dry but due to the recent poor weather delaying growth the greens were not yet up to late spring condition.

11 professionals and 73 amateurs contested the Page Trophy in the first edition over 18 holes rather than the traditional 36.

The 2012 National Alliance was held at Caldy Golf Club on the Wirrell on 8 October.  Halifax Huddersfield fielded 3 teams of 5 pairs and managed to fill the last 3 places. Best of our pairs were John Ambler and John Doherty with 40 points. Highest score was 47 points and best pro had 43 points.
