Crow Nest Park on Thursday 15 September 2011

The first Alliance of this season was held in perfect golfing weather, warm sunshine and a very light breeze, on a course in near perfect condition. The Crow Nest Park course was in excellent condition and the winter alliance preferred lies avoided the debris left by the gales of the previous few days. The greens were as fast and true as usual with the pins in some very tricky positions requiring thoughtful positioning of approach shots if three putting was to be avoided.

Early leaders of the Pro-Am were the new lightweight Rob Booth partnered by Andy Hare (3), Bradley Hall, with what seemed in insurmountable 43 points which included 7 gross birdies. This score was just surpassed by late starters Rob Stansfield and Luke Pilkington (4), Crosland Heath, thanks to gross eagle by Luke on the 288 yard 7th hole.

Equalling the Pro-Am winning score of 44 points were home club members Nick Day (7) and ex-pro Chris Mowl (1) ahead of 3 pairs on 42 points. Second place went to Mick Appleyard (6) and Steve Sandie (5), Bradley Hall. Highlights of the winning pair’s round were a net eagle on the stroke 1 412 yard 2nd hole by Nick and a gross eagle on the 514 yard last hole by Chris. A gross eagle was also scored by Mick Appleyard at the 2nd hole the second time round. Equal third were Nick Hirst (10) and Dave Knapton (10), Outlane and Richard Wimpenny (15) and Simon Whitham (17), Crosland Heath.

Trevor Williams was welcomed as the president of the alliance for the 2011/2012 season and it was good to see Jim Crompton back in action again

HHDGA Todmorden GC  Tuesday 27 September 2011

Gareth Evens set a new lowest gross score for the Todmorden GC in the second alliance of the season. His 7 under par 61 included a run of seven birdies from holes 5 to 11 with the only bogey coming at the 17th. With his partner Mark Campbell (8) the Crow Nest Park pair won the Pro-Am with 44 points from Rob Stansfield and Oliver Shaw (8), Crosland Heath, on 40 points.

The Am-Am section was much closer with Ray Attiwell (11) and David Crowther (12), Ryburn, with 41 points just beating Richard Wimpenny (15) and Simon Whitham (17), Crosland Heath, who had 40 points.

The Todmorden course was in excellent condition and the weather was exceptionally good, it was just like the last alliance here back in April.

Outlane G.C. 18 Oct 2011

Another wet and windy day, almost as bad as last week at Crosland Heath, was endured by a very good turnout of 10 professionals and partners and 26 amateur pairs.

Rob Booth produces an outstanding performance to win the Pro-Am on his own, his father, who was to be his partner, having to withdraw due to illness. His 40 points just beat the Crow Nest Park pair Gareth Evans and Mark Campbell (9) with Longley Park’s John Ambler and Jason Micklethwaite (12) a further 3 points back.

The Am-Am was also very close with the home pair of Eddie Casper (13) and John Morris (16) coming out on top with a fine score of 38 points. One point behind were Tony Morrison (9) and Simon Garside (17), Bradley Hall / Willow Valley, with third place going to Independent Huddersfield’s Mick Dempsey (9) and Pete Newey (14).

Winter Alliance at Dewsbury District G.C. on Tuesday, 1st November 2011.

Both the Pro-Am and Am-Am events were quite tight with very good scoring at the top. Gareth Evans and Nick Day (6), Crow Nest Park, won the Pro-Am with 44 points from early leaders Jamie Coverley and Gary Ward (8), Bradley Park, on 43 points. Equal third were David Astin and Andy Cryer (7), Hebden Bridge, and Peter Young and N. Hartley (12), Willow Valley, on 42. Gareth Evans had 4 birdies but the 4 net birdies on the last four holes by Nick Day sealed the win. Jamie Coverley had 7 birdies but Garry Ward did his part coming in on 7 holes. Andy Appleyard (4) and Steve Sandie (5), Bradley Hall, won the Am-Am with 43 points from Jim Murphy (12) and Jimmy Cain (4), Dewsbury/Crosland Heath, who were second on countback from Mike Dempsey (9) and Pete Newey (14), Ind. Huddersfield, on 42 points.

After the severe conditions of the previous Alliance at Outlane we were back to the Indian summer with warm sunshine all day. Heavy overnight rain had left the course wet underfoot and the greens very soft which probably benefited the lower handicap golfers. With 52 pairs competing and some delayed in starting due to the Cooper Bridge traffic chaos the last few groups finished in near darkness.

Hebden Bridge  29 November

The wind and rain defeated the later starters with 12 pairs choosing to walk in rather than bear the pain of the horizontal rain. The near gale force gusting wind kept the scoring very low for all but one pair, Dave Stafford (2), West End, and Alan Dickinson (17), Todmorden, shot an excellent 37 points to win the am-am section. Second place in the am-am just went to the home club pair of Ken Weatherhill (9) and Clive Richards (10) with 31 points. The pro-am was quite tight with the only pair to complete 18 holes, John Ambler and John Thompson (20), Longley Park, winning with 24 points from Dave Astin and Andy Cryer (7), West End / Hebden Bridge, on 23 points. Perseverance by any of the pro-am pairs could have secured the win. As the course was not actually unplayable until some time after everyone came in the results were left to stand.

The Mount Skip course stood up very well to the conditions and it was surprising that despite the greens being quick for the time of year there was very little movement of the ball by the wind. The traditional Christmas dinner was very welcome after the battering taken on the course.

Crosland Heath  21 February

Crosland Heath Golf Club welcomed one of the largest entries for the Alliance in recent times with 70 pairs including 9 professionals. The weather was variable starting with drizzle and sunshine and moderate wind, the drizzle dying out in the late morning but with strengthening winds, the wind then reducing in the afternoon with increasing cloud cover. The course was in fine condition with the greens unusually soft. The greens had been ironed on Monday and were pretty quick for mid February. Mats were optional on closely mown ground.

The Pro-Am was closely contested with Chris Hanson and partner Gary Shuttleworth (11) coming out on top with 40 points. Tim Pollard and John Jennings (9) were 2nd with 39 points and joint 3rd on 38 points were Rob Stansfield and Luke Pilkington (4) and Jack Pearcey and Dave Micheson (12). Chris had an eagle 3 on the third hole David Astin an Eagle 3 on the 15th.

The Am-Am section was even tighter with three pairs on 41 points. Winning on a back 9 countback were home club pair Graham Procter (11) and Paul Marsland (12) who got off to a quick start with a net eagle 3 on the first hole for Paul and accumulating 13 points on the first four holes. In second place on a back 6 countback were Mick O’Hara (8) and Barry Workman (14), Bradley Park, with Dave Stafford (2) and Alan Dickinson (17), Todmorden, in third. Mick had a net eagle 3 into the wind on the 13th and Dave had a very rare gross eagle 2 on the 11th.

There were 10 eagles in all, three on the 3rd,two on the 1st and 15th, and one on the 10th, 11th and 13th.

The median score was 35 points.

Ogden  6 March

The pro-am prize was shared by John Ambler and John Doherty (5) of Longley Park and Tim Pollard and John Jennings (8) of Halifax with 42 points. In third place were Rob Stansfield and Des Senior (9) of Bradley Park and Hebden Bridge with 41 points.

The Am-Am was won by Mark Birkett (1) and Chris Lander (3) of Halifax with 43 points from John Broadbent (14) and David Peel (6) also of Halifax with 42 points. Third place went to Graham Proctor (11) and Adrian Wallis (9) of Crosland Heath on countback from Neil Morrison (13) and Stuart Hodgson (12) of Outlane with 41 points.

The weather was superb although the temperature dropped in the afternoon as the wind swung from a Southerly to a Westerly. The course was in fine condition with just a few wet areas and was played from the forward tees.

The Order of Merit is very close with Gareth Evans on 42 points and Rob Stansfield on 41.

The median score was 37 points.

Meltham  20 March

Another very good entry with 8 Pros and a total of 62 pairs. Again we had very good weather, the early cool wind dropping in the afternoon. The course was in good condition although the fast fairways made keeping the ball in play difficult on some holes. Unfortunately due to recent spiking and top dressing the greens were not at their best.

The pro-Am was won with a fine 41 points by Gareth Evans and Nick Day (6) of Crow Nest Park wit 5 birdies and no bogies and equal scoring by both players. . Joint second on 36 points were Dave Astin and L. Webster (13) of Hebden Bridge and John Ambler and Mick Rattigan (8) of Longley Park.

The Am-Am was won with an excellent 43 points by Gary Shuttleworth (11) and Paul Toon (16) of Bradley Hall with a net eagle and 7 net birdies. They were one of the later starters. 3 pairs were on 41 points with positions decided by count-back. Second were Andy Appleyard (3) and Tracey Gerrard (14) of Bradley Hall and Halifax. Third were Zenon Sydor (13) and Nigel Bolam (11), Independent Huddersfield and fourth were Ewan Shaw (3) and Dean Whitham (5) of Marsden.

The median score was 35 points.

Bradley Park  3 April

The early leaders in the Pro-Am were Chris Hanson and Dean Whitwam (5) with 39 points, displaced by Gareth Evans and Mark Campbell (8) on 41 points. They were joined by Dave Delaney and Dave Peel (6) who came in with last group to make a tie for first place. Eagles were made on the par 5 5th by Tom Wild and John Ambler.

Making it a good day for Crow Nest Park and the Campbells the Am-Am was won by Jacob Campbell (9) and Ben Adamson (1) with 41 points from Dave Petts (13) and Alan Henderson (17) on 40 points and Toby Garrett (1) and Luke Pilkington (4) also on 40 points but with an inferior back 6. Net Eagles were made by John Fitzpatrick and Adrian Harrison on the 5th, Graham Proctor on the 12th and Dean Alexis on the 15th.

In spite of the firm fairways Bradley Park played long off the back tees and the greens were fairly good considering the lack of growth of the grass. The back nine generally was playing 2 or 3 points harder than the front nine and the median score was 35.

The rain showers were quite light and the persistent rain or sleet forecast for the afternoon did not happen.

Ryburn  17 April

The Ron Parkinson Trophy was closely contested with the Pro-Am winners Gareth Evans & Mark Campbell (8) of Crow Nest Park with 43 points winning from Am-Am winners Jonathan Tolley (15) & Timothy Copley (15) of Ryburn on 42 points with early leaders Chris Hanson & Toby Garrett (1), Ind Woodsome Hall & Crosland Heath on 41 points.

Both Evans & Campbell and Hanson & Garrett had unbalanced rounds with the former having 25 points on the back nine and the latter 23 points on the front nine (in the rain) whereas Tolley & Copley had a balanced 21 points for both halves. Campbell had a run of 5 net birdies (including 2 Gross) from the 11th in their 7 birdie back nine.

Second in the Am-Am were Jake Smith (13) & Andy Mellor (13) of Outlane on a countback from J.Lawton (5) & B.Beeby (10) also of Outlane from a total of six pairs on 39 points. Mellor had one of the 10 net eagles recorded on the day, 4 occurring at the green shared by the downwind 6th & 15th holes.

Playing conditions were not easy with cold blustery winds accompanied by rain for the first 2 or 3 hours with sunshine and short showers following. The course was in fine condition for mid April with medium paced greens.

The Order of Merit was decided with Gareth Evens on an unbeatable 72 points from Rob Stansfield on 45 and John Ambler on 39 with one event to go. The Champion Club is Crow Nest Park with 439 points from Bradley Hall on 424 and Outlane on 421.

Crosland Heath  1 May  Page Trophy

Toby Garrett (1), Crosland Heath, won the 2012 Page Trophy by one stroke from Chris Hanson, Ind Woodsome Hall, with Barry Martin (16), Bradley Park, third on the same score. Chris received the Colin H. Swain Trophy for best professional and the Crosland Heath team of Toby Garrett, Oliver Shaw and Luke Pilkington won the Emmie Smith Trophy.

Barry Martin, Bradley Park, lead after the first round with a remarkable score of 67 off a handicap of 16 but a quadruple bogy on the 12th in a second round of 76 meant he just missed out.

The 12th hole is stroke index 18 on the card but with the wind from the opposite direction to the prevailing wind it played one of the hardest on the day. John Ambler and James Ward (1) had very rare birdies at this hole.

Toby scored very consistently but bogied the 3rd and 12th holes in both rounds. Chris was also very consistent except for a double bogey 14th in the 2nd round. Adam Crum (2), Dewsbury, also had two very solid rounds to win the 3rd amateur prize. An excellent 2nd round 70 gave Adrian Wallis (9), Crosland Heath, the 4th prize.

The fairways and greens were quite dry.  The wind was quite strong and gusting from the East with frequent light rain showers. The conditions were very tough and the very few low scores were exceptional. The median score in each round was 77 and this discounts the no returns. The CSS for the 1st round was 72 and for the 2nd round it was 73.

Page Trophy for best net score                      Toby Garrett (1) Crosland Heath (70 + 72 = 142)

Colin H. Swain Trophy for best professional    Chris Hanson  Ind Woodsome Hall (71 + 72 = 143)

Emmie Smith Trophy for best team                 Crosland Heath (Toby Garrett, Oliver Shaw, Luke                                                                       Pilkington) with a score of 443, an average of just                                                                  under 74.

2nd Pro  Dave Astin (72 + 77 = 149)

3rd Pro  John Ambler (73 + 77 = 150)

National Alliance Championship at Crosland Heath G.C. Monday 26 March 2012

In total contrast to last October when this competition had to be abandoned due to standing water on the greens we had glorious sunshine and no wind for the re-run. The competition was very tight for all the prizes with the main prize for the Championship Cup only decided on the last card in which went to Nottinghamshire 2.

The early leaders were Manchester & District with a fine 171 points (44,43,42&42) with Halifax Huddersfield 2 second on 165. The local side were pushed out of the prizes when both Derbyshire teams came in with 168 points. As the scores for Nottinghamshire 2 came in it was obvious Manchester’s lead was under threat and they just needed a 40 from either of the last 2 pairs and this was achieved by the last pair in. The winning score of Nottinghamshire 2 was 172 points (46,41,41&40) with the best pairing being D.Claxton (4) and K.Naisbett (10).

The Professional competition was even tighter with 4 tied for first place on 41 points. They were Chris Hanson and Gareth Evans of Halifax Huddersfield, Daryl St.John-Jones of Nottinghamshire and last year’s winner Dave Smith of Manchester & District. In fifth place was Graham Cox of Manchester & District. Kevin Taylor of Derbyshire had a hole-in-one on the second hole.

Prizes for the best pairs not in a winning team went to locals Gareth Evans / Nick Day , 46 points and  Dave Peel / Paul Hesselden , 44 points with third place going to R.Carrol / P.Carrol of Liverpool also on 44 points.

The scoring reflected the unusually still conditions at Crosland Heath, we had a day only seen a few times a year, and the course was dry with plenty of run on the fairways. Play was from the back white tees.
